about

I wrote YMWAP as if it were a letter from Mata Hari to her daughter from her prison cell the night before she was executed. Mata Hari was an exotic dancer and courtesan who was sentenced to death for espionage during the first World War. She was an extraordinary woman! She said that her greatest crime was to be an independent woman in a world in a world ruled by men. I dare you to look up images of her and not be completely mesmerized. I wanted to keep this one simple and sparse because the story is so powerful, and I love the melody.

lyrics

Your Mother Was A Peacock

As I put my pen to paper your face I see so well
the moon guides my hand tonight through the bars of my prison cell
In the morning I'll be leaving and dealt a deadly blow
and though the world forbids it the truth you shall know

I fluffed my cheeks and combed my hair and sang a pretty tune
I traded charm for freedom and now death comes too soon
How quickly men will scatter how swiftly the do run
to guard their reputation and deny what they have done.

Your mother was a peacock so soft her feathered hair
too beautiful and tender in a world ruled by men.

When I was approached by guards to be a secret spy
I knew it was my ticket from Berlin to Versaille
I had no close relations no suitor could I find
my beauty would no more suffice to change the judges mind

I have my gloves and fur hat to shield me from the cold
but my dear remember, when the gunshots blow,

Your mother was a peacock so soft her feathered hair
too beautiful and tender in a world ruled by men.
