about

One of the first monologues I ever learned was Maggie's from the play Dancing at Lughnasa by Brian Friel. In it she recalls a memory of losing the man she loved to her best friend. A painful recollection of unrequited love. The sentiment has stuck with me for a lifetime and I can still recite the speech today. The song is full of jealousy, anger and possession. It's creepy even- 'I'm still waiting in the shadows, I'm looking out to see, I'm waiting until forever, till he comes back to me.”

lyrics

Barley Sugar

Once I had a true love, a true love all for me
we roamed around the back hills young and carefree
one day he wore a shirt and tie got down on bended knee
handed me a barley sugar and asked to marry me

Then one day you stroll in an enigmatic dream
your beauty so blinding you stole his heart from me
It all happened so fast quick as a rifle shot
one day he was with me the next he was not

But I'm still waiting in the shadows I'm looking out to see
I'm waiting until forever till he comes back to me

I have some words for you dear, lean in a listen close
he fell in love with me first its me he loves the most
when you're dead and buried, your beauty but a ghost
he'll be returning to me, its me he loved the most.

Until that day I'm waiting, so very patiently
I'm waiting until forever, till he comes back to me
