about

Is different from the rest- its the only one I plucked completely out of thin air. I started with a very strong image of a woman plotting her escape from an abusive home. Late at night, quiet, no-one around. At the time I heard the phrase 'love can't exist alongside injustice'- it's an abbreviation of a Martin Luther King quote I think. And that became the verse “The river's wide and river's deep, and the willows gently weep, Love cannot thrive and cannot grow, where the waters of justice do not flow”.

lyrics

Apples

The wind was howling late last night
As I lay awake in Bed
Over and over in my head
plot my escape my getaway

Your love like apples from a tree
But those apples weren't for me
Red were the apples round and sweet
But those apples weren't for me

Morning sends the dew once more
And the sparrows song forlorn
For it is time for her to go
Leaving the shadows of this home

The sun goes up and the sun goes down
burning circles make no sound
edging toward the morning light
leaving behind a dreadful night

Little rabbit in the lawn
Little rabbit in the lawn
How is it that you get along?
Won't you return and share with me

The rivers wide and the rivers deep
and the willows gently weep
Love cannot thrive and cannot grow
Where the waters of justice do not flow

The starling in the winter flocks
To a land she knows not
Only the wind to guide and show
My bags are packed and I must go

Your love like apples from a tree
But those apples weren't for me
Red were the apples round and sweet
But those apples weren't for me.
